Waiting on You from SHADOWQUEEN- REVIEW

The new single ‘Waiting on You’ from rocky three piece SHADOWQUEEN, landed at my desk for a review this week.

The Australian band consists of Robbi Zana on lead vocals, bass and keys, Si Hopman on guitar and backing vocals and Alex Deegan who plays the hard hitting drums and also contributes to the vocals. The band have a unique twist, not only in the sound of their music, but in that they are one of the few rock bands who is female fronted- something which I really am a fan of!

Robbi’s vocals perfectly contrast with the paunchiness of the hard hitting rock undertones of the song and her strong yet feminine vocals are the perfect contribution to the track. The song features groovy and memorable guitar riffs, brilliantly melodic chorus’ and a strong rock undertone without being overpowering. I love how the band have managed to create a rock inspired song that still highlights the band’s true musical ability, I suppose I would have to describe it as ‘melodic rock’.

Overall, I really do love this track! It is a track which you could really jump around and rock out to but you could also see yourself banging your head to! I will be sure to keep up to date with what the band are up to next and I hope more of their music will come my way in the future!

Ian Martyn’s Stunning Debut Album ‘Life’s an Emotional Journey’

For lovers of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac  Ian Martyn’s expressive and greatly inspiring new single ‘I Can Feel Your Power’ epitomises the  support and comfort that art can bring to people especially at their darkest times in life. In Ian’s case it’s living with the earth shattering experience of losing both his wife and mother in the space of just 5 months.

As well as using his dreams to inspire his lyrics (I Can Feel Your Power) he visited a Tibetan monastery in Scotland to study Buddhism in order to help him manage the difficulties of his new life. At the monastery he had the unusual experience of meeting a soul-mate and felt a severe case of’ Déjà Vu’.

Ian Martyn’s unique approach to writing his music is that of writing the lyrics as a wholly meaningful and poetic piece of literature, so beautiful that the words alone just scream out for music. Ian’s music aids the healing process of any kind of personal strife or bereavement and is the perfect soundtrack to finding a new directions in life.

Although Ian doesn’t gig or tour he has some very notable people who have performed on his music. Richie Buckley (from Van Morrison) played the  saxophone on the track ‘Déjà vu’ who Peter Eades (Clannad) also performed drums on. Larry Hogan, Ian’s co-producer, on ‘I Can Feel Your Power’ and ‘Déjà vu’ has worked with Clannad, Thin Lizzy, Bob Geldof, Ronan Keating, to name but a few.

His other co-producer Richard ‘Digby’ Smith  for 6 of the other album tracks  also played some bass and supporting keyboards on some tracks. ‘Digby’ has worked on such artists music as Bad Company’s Album, Led Zeppelin’s 3rd and 4th albums, Bob Marley, Eric Clapton, Cat Stevens, John Martyn (many more of note) and humbly possesses 2 Gold Disc awards and has had 2 No.1’s simultaneously worldwide that he engineered.

Alongside his emotional life journey Ian features international artists for his music artwork. Some artists worthy of note are Jack Vettriano (on ‘Why Don’t You Tell Me’), Leonid Afremov and Sera Knight (on ‘You Are The One’), Laurie Hamilton, Adam Scott Miller, Delmary and (on ‘I Can Feel Your Power’) Daniel Eskridge (on ‘Dance With Spirits’), Rassouili and Josephine Wall (on ‘Déjà Vu’).

They have all said they are delighted and honoured to have a share in Ian’s journey and adding an extra dimension to Ian’s enlightening music.

Bull Funk Zoo Releases Explosive and Unruly Second Album ‘Dangerous Radio’

Following the release of his fiery and ballsy singles ‘Would You’ and ‘Burnin’, Bull Funk Zoo is on a parade and ready to take the rock industry by storm. Raw and uncompromising, ‘Dangerous Radio’ is BFZ’s blindfolded rollercoaster ride of rock, funk, blues, sex and the news, all the while tipping his hat to masters like Jimi Hendrix, Chilli Peppers, Range Against The Machine, Clutch, Frank Zappa and the Sex Pistols.

While previous collaborations featured Eslam Jawad -M.C (former Gorillaz and Wu Tan Clan) and Hamdan Al-Abri,  ‘Dangerous Radio’ sees Assaad Lakkis a.k.a. Bull Funk Zoo performing and producing the whole album himself. Assaad describes ‘Dangerous Radio’ as a big bad bull rocking out, fornicating & wildly stompin’ the blues to rubble. Hendrix havin’ a drink with Tom Waits & RATM decided to tear it up.

Bull Funk Zoo’s debut album was recorded in 2013 and got the highest ratings for an unsigned band’s record by Rolling Stone. In the Middle East, he has made a name for himself, playing in front of up to 30,000 people at concerts, supporting the likes of Sting, Sade, Timbaland and others. Bull Funk Zoo is continuously working on new material, videos and other creative endeavours. He says: “Creativity is my drug of choice, it has got me in a vice.”

Assaad was born in Dubai after his parents had to escape the devastating war in Lebanon in the 70s. As a young boy, music always played a big role at home, which had Assaad growing up to the sounds of James Brown and various Motown artists. When he first saw Kiss performing on TV, the energy of rock’n’roll both intrigued and scared him. Enchanted by the magic of it all, he soon discovered bands like Soundgarden, Megadeth, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jeff Beck, broadening his musical horizons and leading him to constantly crave new experiences.

At the age of 17, he moved to the US for a few years to attend university, and dig further into unknown musical realms. During this time, he also discovered punk rock and jazz, which soon lead him to realise that the mentality of these genres fitted in perfectly with his own worldview.  Both in music and life, Assaad is a free spirit who is willing to cross boundaries in order to expand his mind. He surrounded himself with like-minded people such as the spoken word artist Eric Bailey and Glen Burris, a well-known horn player who played and recorded with Miles Davis on “Man With The Horn”.

“Bull Funk is the ideal description of the music; it’s got attitude, heart, grace, and it’s in-your-face. The Zoo is the Bull Funk collective, hence Bull Funk Zoo.”

Dangerous Radio is out September 12th

Rocky four piece The 109s are pushing rock to the max with their debut album

Hampshire-based four-piece, The 109s, are here to put rock riffs back where they belong: loud and high in the mix, clawing and stomping their way through the speaker cones to grab listeners by the throat and pummel them into submission . . .

The 109s have taken everything good about Zeppelin, Sabbath, Royal Blood, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, MC5, The Stooges, Soundgarden and The Black Keys, and distilled from it a 100-percent-proof moonshine-mash that is all their own – a heady brew that kicks like a mule, burns like a mother, but has everyone asking for seconds . . .

Stream the album here:

The band’s song arrangements are always original and surprising, wringing every droplet of dynamism and groove from a single riff, before strutting seamlessly through a flurry of exciting changes that are strung together with the delicacy of dewdrops on a cobweb.

The 109s’ eponymous debut album is due out October 5th

Cado REVIEW

The new EP from Irish composer Cado, is inspired by his love of The Beatles and true rock and roll. After deciding that he was stuck in the wrong era he has dedicated his life to music, having been a member of bands and now releasing his first solo EP ‘Take Me Back’.

Listen to/download the EP here: https://cadomusic.bandcamp.com/

He is bringing a modern twist to rock and roll on his new EP which features 4 energy filled tracks. The funky guitar riffs and energy is evident throughout and is filled to the brim with old school beats that really make you want to get up and dance along. There is also evidence of Cado’s diversity on the track ‘Oh Baby’ which takes a slower more calm approach to music and is full of guitar riffs and beautifully natural vocals.

Cado is truly musically talented, playing multiple instruments and having toured with The Shades. Cado also mixes, writes and records all of his music himself at home in his studio which gives his music a personal touch.
