WINNER OF SONY ATV SONG WRITING COMPETITION TIFFANI JUNO SET TO RELEASE SOLO DEBUT EP GO HARD

Having won Sony/ATV’s song writing competition during her college years and collaborated with a number of notable artists including Shy FX and Jakwob, the latter of whom she charted with in the UK top 40 with ‘Somebody New’, London based electro-soul singer-songwriter, Tiffani Juno, is back with her debut EP, Go Hard – an introspective collection of songs that document the turbulent years of growing up and her struggle with depression.

After winning the coveted competition from the global music publishing company at the age of 18, Tiffani found life-changing opportunities at her feet, which led to her working with famed producers such as Gorgon City, Balistiq and Dean James Barrett. She even contributed backing vocals to Iggy Azalea’s album, but Tiffani then decided to slow things down and take a break in order to figure out what she wanted to do and who she wanted to be part of that journey.

Fortunately, as she started at University, Tiffani got back on her feet and returned to her passion of making music, covering many of the topics that had troubled her previously, such as insomnia, fear of failure and her desire to succeed. Now, all these feelings have been encapsulated in Tiffani’s aptly named new EP, Go Hard.

Having tried her hand at a number of instruments during her youth, Tiffani never found one that really suited her, describing herself as ‘a bit music dyslexic’ and eventually realising that her voice was her best weapon. Despite this, Tiffani also delved into the world of acting as a child, appearing in Eastenders, Holby City, The Hoobs and Bend It Like Beckham, before focusing her talents on writing music as she grew up.

With a sleek voice that possesses a bold, reminiscent clarity, ‘kindred spirit’ Juno makes her music relatable to both mainstream and underground circles, most evidently on the new single, ‘Think About It’. Tiffani noted: The ‘Go Hard’ EP came about through me revisiting music I love and writing about what has been happening to me. On the whole, the sound of the EP is reflective of my love of UK bass and electronic music but you can hear elements of reggae, dub(step), jungle and dnb too. I love to perform and this EP has got so much energy that when I listen to it, I feel rejuvenated and it reminds me where and what I need to be doing, day in and day out, to make myself content.’

Although Tiffani’s music has a highly contemporary sound, she takes influence from a number of 60s icons, musically and culturally, including Janis Joplin, Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald, who help form her crafted and soulful sound.

Naming herself after Roman Queen of the Gods, Juno, the spiritual singer songwriter will be looking to crown herself as the Queen of her own genre, blending dance and dub-influences with her alternative brand of R&B.

‘Down The Aisle’ by Music Theory

Making a quality pop song in this day and age can seem like an impossible task, but emerging Egyptian artist, Music Theory, seems to have cracked the code for it and here’s the secret: keep it simple.

Music Theory thrives on classic instrumentation and song-structuring which he couples with simple, but heartfelt lyricism. So often these days, we see artists trying to do too much to stand out from the crowd, but sometimes it’s worth just going back to the basics and original tried-and-tested recipe as you know that it works!

Through this well considered song writing process, the talented songwriter tackles issues as diverse as love, hope, despair, loneliness and inner conflicts. And evidently, ‘Down The Aisle’ is about as quintessentially love song as it gets. Well worth a listen!

James Gant re-unites with producer Gary Katz for Korvids debut EP ‘Bad Faith’

Love and Money’s James Gant links up with Steely Dan’s producer Gary Katz to debut new Korvids EP ‘Bad Faith’.

Gant was the front man for Love and Money, everyone’s favourite band from the 1980’s who should’ve been massive but somehow weren’t. The other half of The Korvids, Gordy Goudie, is also no stranger to the business having produced music for Simple Minds and played bass and guitar for The Primevals and Echo And The Bunnymen.

The original ‘Bad Faith’ track features Grant in full falsetto vocal mode, underpinned by soul-dance grooves and punchy horns. For the remixes of ‘Bad Faith’ Gary Katz brings it back to the 70’s with a US soul rock sound, contrasting with Kim and Buran’s ‘Sundowner’ remix riding the nu-disco vibe. Push To Break completes the remixes with their pulsing electronic ‘E Mix’, giving the EP an entirely eclectic sound.

Also featured on the EP is synth bass track ‘Blisters’, layered with heavy drums and guitar. The original track is followed by a 1980’s remix ‘Gordy’s Extended Edition’.

TEASER: ‘Sea Speak’ – Mercury

album-artwork

Formed out of a bunch of music students from RNCN, Mercury performed their first gig at the Manchester Jazz Festival back in 2012. Here they were discovered by a group of organisers at the legendary Kings Place in London, who were so impressed by the group’s sound that they invited them to play at King’s Place itself, propelling the band into a new level of recognition.

Mercury has since gone on to be nominated for awards such as the Whittingham Jazz Award in 2013, their lead member Tom Thorp making it to the grand finals of the Taichung International Sax Competition. Developing their sound to incorporate elements of electronica, psychadelia, classical and indie, they have been slowly reshaping jazz for a 21st Century audience, and now have a brand new album in the pipeline titled Sea Speak.
