Brooklyn band Newborn give new life to rock – new single ‘Beautiful Disguise’ and upcoming EP

Following the release of groovy indie single ‘Runaround’, Brooklyn band Newborn have now released the second track from their upcoming EP, a smoky guitar anthem called ‘Beautiful Disguise’ that discusses the use of lyrics to hide one’s flaws and mortality.

The band’s refreshing sound is the result of a multitude of rock influences including Muse, Nirvana, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Arctic Monkeys.

Formed by high school friends Allen James and Eric Weglicki who met in 2005, the two jammed for several years before finally finding a bassist and drummer, playing their first gig in 2013 as a four-piece band. This was later cut down to a three person lineup, both drummer and bassist leaving, the band finding their current percussionist Blake Suben, guitarist Eric Weglicki switching to bass.

“Rock is not dead. Brooklyn trio Newborn released a new single called ‘Runaround’ last week, and it is everything you have been waiting for.!    – AXS Magazine

Frontman Allen discusses the band name, which stemmed from an incident in an elevator one day: ‘It was one of those days where my depression was really bad. The elevator doors opened and a mother came strolling in with her baby. The baby looked right into my eyes and gave me the silliest, happiest smile I’ve ever seen. It completely obliterated my bad mood. I told Eric the story later that day and we decided to call our band “Newborn”. To us the name represents a way of looking through life with constant marvel and to always live in the moment. The way a child does.

Allen has battled with depression for a long time, initially causing him insomnia, sometimes only averaging five hours of sleep a week. Upon leaving a four year college course in physical therapy to form a band, he found that this depression and insomnia was cured. In a wicked twist of fate, he then began receiving bizarre muscular skeletal problems that that caused him to fall into another bout of depression.

Most of our songs were written during this time,’ he recounts. ‘On one hand my life was going so well in that I was doing what I loved and being loved for doing it, and on the other hand it was just a complete nightmare. I’m definitely not out of those woods but I am trying to keep a positive attitude . Music is perhaps the biggest reason for that. It really does heal people.

“The Coney-Island natives are forging a path for a new generation of rock lovers with a DIY attitude and mainstream accessibility.”!   – Pure Grain Audio

The upcoming EP, self-titled Newborn, was mastered by Joe Laporta, who has worked with artists as esteemed as David Bowie, Foo Fighters, The Weeknd, The Killers and Imagine Dragons.

The EP is scheduled for release June 14th.

Instrumental Rock & Metal project The Soft Shades Release Brand New Album ‘Keeper of the Groove’

Debut album set for release on 22nd April 2016

Cover_Art small

‘Keeper of the Groove’ is the debut post rock album to be released under the prog rock instrumental project The Soft Shades. The musical project was put together by Dmitry Gubsky in 2011.

Listen here:

Following on from the success of the 4 track EP released in November, The Soft Shades are now ready to release the full instrumental album and the end of April.

Founder Dmitry, has been passionate about music his whole life, he started learning how to play the accordion when he was just 7 years old. He has gone onto play and tour in lots of different successful bands in Europe as well as being involved in lots of different musical projects in his home country of Ukraine.  In 2012 he played at Euroblast in Cologne with his previous band ‘Joncofy’. After being in lots of different bands,  Dmitry wanted to create a new style of prog & metal instrumental music where he was involved in every aspect of the project from creating the music, writing the scores to producing and recording it all together for the album. It is very much his project that he had wanted to create for a really long time but wasn’t able to in his bands previously.

Each track on the album is highly original and a reflection of a different experience and emotion. At times the music is very cinematic with an intense feeling that you are waiting in anticipation for what is next to come.

Dmitry has spoken about the different influences behind the album;

“Everyday mood is what influenced the album, the track titles on the album show in some way what exactly inspired me for each song and all personal to experiences in my life.”

Highlight tracks include ‘First September Weekend, Sky Flares and November Storms. Another popular album track is ‘When This Day Comes’. This song was created to reflect the feeling you might feel on a Monday morning and thinking about going back to work after a perfect weekend off. It is a melancholic song that Dmitry has portrayed beautifully to reflex this mood.

The whole album is an exploration into the immersive world of rock, metal and instrumental music. The atmosphere over the 11 tracks perfectly encapsulates Dmitry’s idea of exploring moods and experiences he has had in his life. The tracks are so powerful in portraying a message and captivating the listener that there is absolutely no need for words. The tracks vary from big rock guitar riffs and drums to an industrial eerie sound on tracks like ‘November Storms’ and ‘The Fall’. This combination of tracks on the album using familiar musical elements in different ways proves to make a very powerful and enticing listen.

Deadly Circus Fire: ‘The Hydra’s Tailor’

12 track album due on June 16th through Musicarchy Media

Described by Metal Hammer as “one of the most imaginative and formidable” prog bands currently plying their trade, Deadly Circus Fire are a London based band who thrive on getting stronger and stronger in their battle with the mainstream. Their sound has been compared to the likes of Tool, Mastodon and Deftones, mixing heavy guitars with melodious moments to create something special.

And it does take something special to turn heads at publications like Metal Hammer, as well as Classic Rock, who described Deadly Circus Fire as “one of the most striking young prog metal bands to come on the scene in the past couple of years”. For a taste of what Deadly Circus Fire are all about, here’s the video for album track ‘House of Plagues’:

It’s clear that Deadly Circus Fire are a band who will make a mark on the metal music scene. They’ve already supported huge cult band Skindred on a European tour, counting it among their career highlights so far. They also previously caused quite a stir by performing in zombie clown make up.

In time though, the music of Deadly Circus Fire has evolved to speak for itself, making a huge impact both live and in the studio without the need for such on stage histrionics.
